So Lonely Lineage: 1st generation Mono Audience Recording (Panasonic Slimline w/ built-in condenser mic) > Playback with Sony ProWalkman WM-D6C > Behringer Denoiser > Blue Tube Preamp > RNC1773 Compressor > Bellari RP562 Tube Exciter > Tascam CDRW-700 > AIFF > FLAC (Level 8) Someone recently posted a recording of this concert. http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=202921 I totally enjoyed hearing someone else's self-described "crap" recording, which turned out to be decent enough for my taste. I figured I'd listen to my very own crappy and never-before-circulated recording and see how it stacks up. My recording has more bottom and mids, slightly less audience noise, but it's 3 minutes shorter due to tape flips ("when the tape Is running down, you make the best of what's still around.") I gave it a fair shot and cleaned up my recording. It's still lo-fi, but it's my souvenir of the show and I dig it. If you are the proud owner of a yet superior recording, please post it. For the Police freak with interest in having an alternate source with known lineage, this is for you. About the recording: This was only my second attempt at recording a concert. My gear consisted of a Panasonic Slimline cassette recorder which, for the time, was a small unit-measuring only about 1.75" thick and weighing no more than 2 pounds! The thing was small enough to give me the optimism to sneak it into the venue. This was before the days of the Sony ProWalkman. I've learned much since that time about recording but more important, in the case of my crude early recordings, I've learned how to coax the most out of a raw mono source to make for a decent listening experience. For all intent and purpose, I consider this a "raw" source, though it's cleaned up as the original mono cassette sounded pretty flat. I try to use the gear as transparently as possible. No simulated stereo-imaging has been applied. Occasionally, I'll do that but skipped it here. About the performance: The Police's meteoric rise--going from CBGB's to Madison Square Garden in three years' time without the existence of MTV--was enough to pack the place with a very enthusiastic crowd. The band just rocked; they really knew how to play to a room that size. This tape required virtually no noise reduction since the audience screams hardly ever let up! As the earlier torrent pointed out, during De Do Do Do etc. they bass drum broke. Sting bantered while the drum was being fixed and led the crowd in a sing-along chorus of Yellow Rose Of Texas. Since this took awhile and the monologue is entertaining enough, I made separate tracks, effectively making three sections out of the song. Just for the pure nostalgic heck of it, I am including a picture of the original "crap" master cassette tape. I still have the ticket stub in storage somewhere. It would tell you that the recording was made from what used to be known as the "blue" section, i.e. the nose bleed seats at Madison Square Garden. Considering this, as well as the prehistoric gear, the recording turned out alright, though laughable by today's standards.
