Next To You 2:57 LC's Notes: My own tape transfer. Mediocre audience recording though this tape copy doesn't sound too genned. Many times there are interruptions in the recording, more in the latter half of the show than the earlier half. My guess is that the taper's microphones were constantly being dislodged. There is a cut in Shadows In The Rain at 0:17, probably for a tape flip. Side 1 of the tape ends with a fade out at the beginning of Driven to Tears, and then Side 2 begins with a fade in of that same song. My guess is that along the way in the generating process, some genius decided to rearrange the tape and do that, because it does not sound like there was a tape flip in Driven To Tears. There is 3:30 of audience cheering after Can't Stand Losing You. There was no "So Lonely" on the tape. There is tape warble in "Next to You." The performance itself is interesting. This was the first performance of "Man In A Suitcase" and "Shadows In The Rain." The band plays the songs closer to the studio versions than in later shows. Shadows in the Rain in particular is faster than how they would perform it in later shows, and sounds truer to the album than any other performance of it. Bring On The Night has a drier sound than other 1980-81 shows. Deathwish sounds more aggressive than other shows. When The World Is Running Down gets a 40 second introduction. Also, unlike other live performances, Sting starts singing after the fourth phrase, just like on the album. They also went light on the synthesizers this show. Finally, Next To You does not segue into anything, rather it ends strangely and quietly. Sting says goodnight, the drums and guitar peter out, and then Sting plays one last bass note.
