Next To You 5:02 Notes: This was a LOUD show, even louder than the Philly and Hershey shows. In my opinion, it was too loud; at times Sting's voice was not discernible. Nevertheless, you wouldn't know that by listening to this recording. This is an excellent audience recording, even better than my Philadelphia recording. I learned from that recording and made some adjustments. First, I put the input level on 10 on the Edirol and just let it run. It peaks around -6 dB, meaning I could have raised it even a couple more levels, but the important thing is that there's no clipping. Therefore any distortion you may hear (especially in Sting's singing) is how it sounded from my seat. Second, I took advantage of my seat and purposely sat so that the mics (sticking out of my mesh hat) would face the left speaker stack directly. Once in a while I moved my head but overall, I sat pretty still. The sound is more focused with no echo, even though I was close to the back of the stadium. I also did not talk at all during the show, and there is very little audience noise during the songs. There are an occasional whistle or "woo" from the people around me, but nothing at all distracting. Unfortunately, this show was a "take the money and run" show. I was hoping so hard for even a slight change in the setlist. Interestingly, at the Philly show they played no intermission music before "Get Up Stand Up." Here, they played a lot of intermission music after Fiction Plane, including the video of The Clash's "Rock The Casbah." But of course, it was the same setlist, with the same scripted lines from Sting (e.g. "This is from our first album in 1878"). I think it was a boring, lackadaisacal, sloppy performance. This was the weakest of the three performances I have seen this year (Philly, Hershey and Hartford). It certainly didn't start off well with Andy's atrocious introduction to "Message in a Bottle," which actually sounds better on the recording than it did in person. There were just too many times where the band was not together. Some of them were subtle and Stewart was able to cover up OK, but other times they were pretty noticeable. Those times would be in the middle of "Don't Stand So Close To Me" (Sting keeps singing the refrain when the rest of the band wants to move on), at the end of "De Do Do Do" (the ending was out of sync, and Stewart is basically playing the cymbals alone), and in the middle of "Truth Hits Everybody" (once again, Sting wants to keep singing the refrain, whereas the other band members want to move on). Sting also screwed up the lyrics to "Truth" in the bridge section, even though he's supposedly using a teleprompter. I'd also like to know what happened to Andy's guitar tone. Can he not reproduce his signature clean but damp sound anymore? I don't like his tone now, which is distorted and crunchy. "The Bed's Too Big Without You" sounded awful in my opinion, even compared to other shows on this tour. Perhaps it doesn't sound that bad on the recording, but in person I thought it sucked. His playing was particularly choppy and sterile during that one. Anyway, enjoy. FFP File, shntool results file and a copy of my ticket are included. Originally circulated only to **.
