Comments: Pretty nice recording from Elvis Costello's final week opening for The Police on the 2008 leg of their reunion tour. As opening sets go, Elvis delivered with an incendiary performance that was heavy on material from his current album. The fans didn't really give him the props he deserves for his lifetime achievements, but on the whole they were relatively respectful. The highlight of the set, of course, was the unbilled duet with Sting on "Alison" -- as usual, it took a few seconds before the crowd realized who was sharing the vocals and they went wild through the rest of the song. Quality-wise, I was relatively happy with how it came out. I was next to the soundboard, three rows after the break. The sound was not as good as with the Police's headlining set, and the bass was overwhelmingly heavy on my recording. Audio Cleaning Lab took out the worst of the pounding; other than bumping up the +3 kHz range a bit, I haven't done any mastering to this recording. For the majority of his set, there was nobody within about 15 feet of me, so there is hardly any close-mic crowd interference for the set. Overall, nice to have if you're an Elvis completist; this is not the best recording to surface from this run of shows, but it is certainly quite listenable. Mp3 samples are attached.
