Here's a "for completists only" recording of a night that it pains me a little
bit to remember.  This was the evening of Elvis's "secret show" at the El Rey -
he talks about it extensively during this Hollywood Bowl show earlier in the
evening - and I was actually regretting ever getting tickets to the Police.

I would have gladly skipped the Police entirely so that I could be down there,
first in line at the El Rey, but unwisely I did not, and sure enough I got stuck
in traffic leaving the Bowl and by the time I arrived at the "secret show," it
was full up.  To add insult to injury, upon arriving back at home, I discovered
that this tape of the Bowl set had turned out pretty poorly.  It was about a bad
a night as you can possibly have while still actually seeing Elvis Costello play.


I rediscovered the tape last weekend and was surprised to find out it wasn't as
unlistenable as I remembered.  It's certainly on the bad side, and definitely
best enjoyed by completists, but as a completist myself I've listened to many a
Costello show in far worse quality than this.  Since, surprisingly, no other
recording of the show has surfaced, I figured I'd put it up here.  This tour
opening for the Police featured quite a few pleasant surprises, and I'm still
hoping someone will put together a nice compilation of all the one-offs.
"Mystery Dance" and "Uncomplicated" from this night will make for nice additions
to such a set.

The bad news for Police fans: I did not record their show, as I was conserving
disc space and battery for the Elvis show I eventually missed.  Ah, the irony.
Anyway, I'm very sorry, but you'll have to look elsewhere to fill that gap.
