It is also a solid and altogether satisfying pregression in Andy's collection of work on Private Music, including _The Golden WIre_ (1989), the album which spawned one of his best-know tracks, "A Piece of Time," scoring him a Grammy nomination. Produced by Mike Mainieri (Steps Ahead, Brecker Brothers, Mark Knopfler, Carly Simon, Ben Sidrian), _World Gone Strange_ is an impeccable jazz set, opening with the empathetic title track, firing up some rhythmic signatures which are sure to please (like the contagious "Ruffled Feathers") and mixing both upbeat and ballad fusion numbers, plus an open-minded east-meets-west piece. Andy's bandmates this time out are tight and up to the task, each respected for his own previous work: Chas Wackerman on drums, Tony Levin on bass, Mitchel Forman on keyboards, with an addition of Brazillian pianist Eliane Elias and Victor Bailey on bass. The "World Gone Strange Tour" has already kicked off to sold-out houses and rave reviews, beginning in Montreal and promising dates through the Fall. A highlight this year is the Montreux Jazz Festival where Andy continues to be a beloved headliner. The U.S. leg of the tour will begin in November. Last year's release of _Charming Snakes_ and Andy's jazz tour brought the critics out in force: From _Downbeat_: "(Andy summers) comes charging out of the gate hard on _Charming Snakes_. Pushed by Chad Wackerman's big backbeats and challenged by Bill Evans' urgent sax work, Summers rises to the occasion and rips off some most impressive guitar work, particularly the Holdsworthian legato abandon and whammy phrasing he displays on 'Mexico 1920' and the agressive edge he flaunts on the bombastic 'Big Thing.' The lad's got chops on top of being clever." From the _Tennessean_: "Andy Summers' deft improvisational skills on _Charming Snakes_ have broken down the jazz charts." And from the _Washington Post_: "As a composer, Summers has progressed from the mood of his earlier solo recordings to solidly structured and arranged pieces on his new _Charming Snakes_ release. (In concert), his jazz chops have nothing to prove." Andy's is a diverse career which, in addition to his recording catalogue, spans film scoring, acting and photography. He is a featured character in the upcoming "Another You," set for release this summer by Tri Star Pictures, starring Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. (Yes, that's Andy in the role of bandleader -- with Pryor on sax -- in the film's trailer, now playing at your local theatre.) Several Summers' compositions are prominant in the soundtrack. Andy's best known film work was his soundtrack to the huge "Down and Out in Beverly Hills." Following the success of his hardbound collection of photographs ("Throb"), Andy Summers Photo Exhibits have opened in New York, Los Angeles, London, France and Japan. Andy Summers continues to be one of the foremost and most cherished guitarists and innovators in the recording world. His awards are many, including the five-time honor he has received from _Guitar Player_'s annual reader's poll, as Number One Guitarist. _World Gone Strange_ is his fourth album for Private Music. The first was _Mysterious Barricades_, (1988), followed by _The Golden Wire_ and _Charming Snakes_. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Eclectic Music is a production of Datta Production and Development 905 97th Street Kenosha, WI 53143 datta@vacs.uwp.edu This newsletter was brought to you via computer resources courtesy of University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Datta Production and Development.
